Immobilizer Faults – Can we help?

Yesterday was a particularly busy day, but a number of  enquiries were related to immobilizer or ECU faults rather that key related issues.

At Keyishoes, our main service is that of programming spare keys or new keys when the originals are lost.  But what if there is another vehicle problem which seems to point to immobiliser issues?  I’ll give you some examples from yesterday:

  1. Renault Clio 1  - Fault – Intermittent starting, immobilizer light flashing
  2. Kia Sedona – Cut out while driving – “IMMO” showing on the dashboard
  3. Skoda Fabia – Bought with a known electrical fault – Immobilizer light flashing

In 2 out of the 3 cases above the key was not the problem.  However, we were still able to assist in a small but valuable way.  Some vehicle problems are difficult to trace without expensive dealer diagnostics.  In such cases, sometimes a process of elimination is a cost effective option before approaching the dealer.  This is how we were able to help with the 3 vehicles above.

Renault Clio Key

Renault Clio Key

  1. Renault Clio 1 – This early Clio has a common key fault.  They frequently begin working intermittently and eventually stop altogether.  If that happens then the replacement key is quite costly at around £130.  However, we were able to read the data from the key and “write” the data to a knew transponder.  This key now works fine.  The key we’ve supplied in this case is a non-remote one to keep costs to a minimum on an old car but the old key can still be used for the remote function alongside the new key to start the engine.  All of this was less than £50.
  2. Kia Sedona – I attended the car and realised that due to the manner in which the car had failed this was unlikely to have the immobilizer as the route cause.  This was confirmed by the fact that my equipment could not communicate with the engine management system.  All the fuses were checked and found to be fine.  In this case, we were able to confirm that the problem was more likely to be in the engine management system.
  3. Skoda Fabia – Some simple checks were made to ensure the key with the vehicle did in fact have an intact transponder fitted.  Then we tried to communicate with the vehicle using our diagnostic key programmer.
    Immobilizer or Key Fault?

    Immobilizer or Key Fault?

We could not!  We checked the fuses which were all intact.  I checked the function of the electrics and discovered that a number of the lights were not illuminating on the dashboard.  They weren’t which indicates that this is where the fault may lie.  Perhaps the dashboard clocks are faulty?  This is linked to the immobilizer on VAG based vehicles.  The customer has now eliminated the possibility of a key fault and can go with a certain amount of confidence to a specialist which we recommended to trace the original fault and effect a repair.

So no, we cannot repair immobilizer faults but can check whether the problem is a simple key programming issue and offer clues to the likely problems.  This service is available at a modest £50 call out fee withing 3 miles of Carlisle City Center, deducted from the price of the key if that is found to be at fault.  The service can be provided further afield with a £1 per mile mileage subsidy.  Call Simon on 07808 793 418

120 pairs of shoes recycled

A big thank you to everyone who recycled shoes at Keyishoes! We now have 120 pairs of shoes the majority in good condition and a few unworn!

120 Pairs of Shoes Recycled!

That may not seem a lot but it gives me enormous pleasure to imagine that up to 120 people who don’t own shoes may get their first pair!  These will be sent to developing countries to provide affordable footwear for those less fortunate than we are.

Plastic-Bottle-Shoes-300x293

The shoes will be sorted and any that are beyond repair will be broken down and recycled into materials such as insulation.  The rest are sent to developing countries where local people will refurbish them and then sell them providing employment opportunities and shoes for those who cannot afford new ones.

Over 330 million pairs of shoes end up in landfill in the UK each year!  Despite the fact that our fellow humans in other countries are wearing flattened plastic bottles as shoes!

The materials in shoes may take many centuries to decompose.  In fact, recently the BBC reported on a pair of leather shoes were found in a cave in Armenia that were thought to be 5500 years old!!  That’s 400 years older than stone henge and 1000 years older than the pyramids in Giza!  So do you agree it’s worth thinking about what we do with our shoes when we have finished with them?

5500 Year Old Shoe

5500 Year Old Shoe

Traditional shoe repairs have been on the decline over the last 3 or 4 decades as we have moved to a throw away society.  Even so shoe repairers keep about 62 million pairs of shoes out of landfill each year.  Shoe repairers are actually benefiting from the current economic climate as people find their budget restricted and so seek to keep their shoes longer.  But really, isn’t it time we thought about repairing shoes and in fact other items rather than renewing them, not just for money but to preserve our natural resources and avoid further damage to our planet.

Of course, the shoes we wear are just the start, but what a great way to start!  Remember, repairing & recycling: reduces landfill, reduces the use of precious natural resources, creates employment and provides affordable shoes for developing countries and repairing saves us money too!

Our shoe recycling bin is located outside our mobile trailer shop permanently positioned in the Homebase /PC World Car Park, Kngstown, Carlisle.  Please take some time to collect together any unwanted shoes in any condition and recycle them with us.  Recycling your shoes also supports the Children’s Variety Club Charity.  http://www.varietyclub.org.uk/

How Secure Is Your Vehicle?

How Safe Is Your Vehicle?

Car theft is on the decrease and that has got to be good news!  However, is all well with car security or should car owners continue to be concerned about the security of their vehicle?

Since 1995 all vehicles manufactured in the UK have factory fitted immobilisers installed making it much more difficult to steal a car.  This technology includes a small transponder installed in the key which is read by

The technology inside your key!

The technology inside your key!

the vehicles immobiliser system when inserted in the ignition.  If the key is not recognised or if an attempt is made to “hotwire” the vehicle the car will not start making it virtually impossible to steal without the correct keys.  This has had a dramatic affect on reducing car theft.  Nevertheless, according to Home Office statistics, in the UK in the 12 months to December 2010 over 107 thousand vehicles were stolen.  In fact in figures published during 2009, 83% of vehicles are stolen using the victims own key!

This means that although car theft is down, the crime itself can have a substantially more serious impact on the victim.   For a car thief to steal a car it is now necessary for them first to steal the keys, and this means additional and more intrusive and even violent crime is committed, including house burglary and even car-jacking!  Just recently Keyishoes heard of an instance when someone’s car keys had gone missing.  Within 48 hours the car was stolen, then found crashed and burnt out.  Don’t assume your car keys have been lost.  Could they in fact have been stolen?

How secure is your car?

Contrary to popular belief the most commonly stolen vehicles are not high performance or luxury cars.  Here is a list of the top 5 vehicles stolen in 2009:

1) Ford Transit
2) Ford Fiesta
3) Vauxhall Astra
4) Volkswagen Golf
5) Vauxhall Corsa

So how can you protect yourself and your vehicle from this increasingly insidious crime?  Keyishoes Specialist Car Key Programmers based in the Homebase / PC World Car Park, Kingstown, Carlisle, have compiled the following tips to help you to avoid becoming victims of car theft:

  1. Never leave your car unattended with the keys in the ignition e.g. While Paying for fuel of collecting a parking ticket from a Pay & Display Meter
  2. Don’t leave car pass with security details in the car – Many vehicles have a car pass or other security details in the vehicle which allow cutting of a new key or access to the cars security system
  3. Don’t leave anything in the car that could identify your home address
  4. Don’t leave your keys near the door inside your home and keep them out of sight.  The relatively new crime of “fishing ” is where a car thief “fishes” through the letter box to hook car keys off a window sill or table near to the front door
  5. Do make sure you are the only one in possession of keys for your vehicle.  If you have bought a used car, especially privately and it only comes with one key, where are the others?   Here at Keyishoes we can delete all missing keys and provide a new spare to ensure that there are no other keys that could potentially be used to steal your vehicle.

Latest Car Theft Scam!

How safe is your car?  The fact is that since the mid nineties, it has been increasingly difficult for car thieves to steal your car.  Transponder car keys have been fitted to cars in the UK since 1995.   This system is where a small chip embedded in your key communicates with your vehicle.  If the vehicle recognises the key then the car will start.  If it doesn’t then the immobiliser prevents the starting of your car.

This means that the thief has had to come up with other ways of stealing your car.  This usually involves getting hold of the car keys, either by stealing coats, jackets or handbags left unattended or fishing keys through your letter box from the table or other furniture where you drop your keys when you return home.  More severe types of car theft involve burglary, and car jacking!

Here are a couple of scams to watch out for.  The first is theft out of your car, rather than the car itself.Car Thief

Imagine for a minute that you have parked in a Pay and Display Car Park.  How often do you lock your car while you go for a ticket?  I know I certainly don’t!  A car thief loiters in the car park and as you go to the ticket machine he casually passes the car and opens the back or passenger side door very slightly.  You place your ticket in the car and walk away “locking” the car with your remote.   You hear it click and assume everything is okay.  However, a few seconds later the car unlocks itself detecting an open door.  The thief helps himself to your belongings and then carefully closes and locks your doors as he leaves.  You come back to your locked car and can’t understand how you managed to have your stuff stolen with no damage and the car still locked!

Here is another involving the theft of the vehicle itself.  As you are leaving a car park with your shopping two thieves work in tandem to steal the vehicle.  When your reversing one thief slaps the back of the car.  Thinking you’ve hit something, you get out of the car – leaving the keys in the ignition- to survey the damage.  The second thief jumps in the car and drives off!  Around the corner he picks up his accomplice!

So how much consideration do we give to the possibility of our becoming a victim car crime?
